🌿Assalamu Alaikum, Dallas!
Tonight, MAS Dallas is opening a new series called State of the Ummah with an honest conversation about Palestine for high school brothers and sisters, and Saturday evening ICF is hosting a Qiyam Night: Remembering Gaza with firsthand accounts from medical professionals and communal night prayer. We encourage every family to find a way to show up this weekend — in prayer, in presence, or both. Beyond that, the weekend has something for everyone: the MAS Bazaar on Saturday is a full family day out with vendors, food, and kids’ activities, and IACC is closing out Sunday with what sounds like an epic carnival for the whole community. We also found a bold new halal comfort food spot in Arlington, City Eatz is bringing serious flavor and we think you’ll love it. And we’re kicking off a brand new series in this week’s reflection: Sunnah Habits That Change Your Life. Let’s get into it. 🌿
💭 FAITH REFLECTION — Sunnah Habits That Change Your Life (Week 1): How to Start Your Day Like the Prophet ﷺ
We’re starting a new series this week and we think it might be one of the most practical things we’ve ever shared in Hilalz Dallas. Over the next several weeks, we’re going to walk through a collection of Sunnah habits, small, doable, Prophetic practices that have the power to completely transform the quality of your daily life. Not in a overwhelming, overhaul-everything kind of way. But one habit at a time, one week at a time.
We’re starting at the very beginning: the morning.
The way you start your day sets the tone for everything that follows. And the Prophet ﷺ gave us a complete morning routine, a set of words and actions that function like spiritual armor, wrapping your day in protection, remembrance, and connection to Allah before the world has a chance to pull you in every direction.
It begins the moment you open your eyes.
“Alhamdulillahilladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana wa ilayhi-n-nushur.” — All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us, and unto Him is the resurrection. (Bukhari)
Before your feet hit the floor. Before you check your phone. Before you think about what’s on your plate today you acknowledge that waking up this morning was a gift. Not a given.
Then come the morning adhkar, a collection of short duas and remembrances the Prophet ﷺ taught us to say after Fajr. They include seeking Allah’s protection from Shaytan, affirming Tawheed, sending salawat on the Prophet ﷺ, and asking for forgiveness, provision, and well-being. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever says certain morning adhkar will be protected until evening — and whoever says the evening adhkar will be protected until morning. (Abu Dawood)
Think about that. A few minutes of remembrance in the morning and you have asked Allah to be your shield for the entire day. That is not a small thing. That is everything.
The morning adhkar are not long. The complete set takes most people under ten minutes. Apps like Hisn al-Muslim (Fortress of the Muslim) have them all compiled and transliterated — there is no reason any of us cannot start tomorrow morning with them.
And here is what longtime practitioners of this habit consistently report: the days that begin with morning adhkar feel different. Calmer. More focused. Less reactive. More grateful. Not because the day’s challenges disappeared but because you entered the day anchored, rather than scattered.
This week’s action items:
🌿 Action 1 — Find a collection of the morning athkar. Tomorrow morning, after Fajr, open it and read through the morning adhkar even once. Just once. That’s the starting point.
🌿 Action 2 — Make the waking du’a your very first words tomorrow. Before your phone, before conversation, before anything — say: “Alhamdulillahilladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana wa ilayhi-n-nushur.” Write it on a sticky note and put it next to your bed tonight if you need to. Seven days of starting this way and it will begin to feel like the most natural thing in the world.
❝ “Whoever says in the morning: ‘I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion, and with Muhammad ﷺ as my Prophet’ — it becomes a right upon Allah to please him on the Day of Judgement.” (Abu Dawood) 🌿
