Meet the Family Behind Hilalz Dallas

For most families, dinner table conversations revolve around work gossip, homework struggles, or what's on Netflix. For the Abdellatif family, one particular dinner conversation five years ago turned into something bigger: a newsletter now serving hundreds of Dallas Muslim families.

After taking a strategic pause to reimagine their approach, Hilalz Dallas is back—and this time, they're not just listing events. They're telling the stories behind the businesses, spotlighting the entrepreneurs, and building the comprehensive resource Dallas Muslims have been asking for.

We sat down with the family to talk about running a newsletter together, what new features are being added, and what it means to be Dallas's Muslim concierge service.

Let's start with the basics—who's behind Hilalz Dallas?

We're the Abdellatif family: mother, father, and four teenage children. Each of us has a role in making the newsletter happen every week. We've been homeschooling our children their whole lives and love taking on family projects as part of their learning adventure. This is just our biggest one yet.

How does a family end up running a newsletter together? What's the origin story?

We moved to the Dallas area five years ago and immediately fell in love with how rich the Muslim community is—so many events, new businesses opening, community initiatives. But we were having a hard time keeping track of it all. We'd hear about amazing events a week after they happened, or discover a great halal restaurant months after it opened.

After a conversation about it over dinner one night, we realized we probably weren't the only ones struggling with this. So we decided to start a newsletter to curate the events and businesses for the community. What began as a simple email to 20 friends grew into something much bigger.

"Think of us as your Muslim concierge service for Dallas. We do the research so you can just enjoy."

What makes Hilalz different from just checking Masajid emails or scrolling Instagram for events?

Hilalz is different because we take the time to curate, so you don't have to sift through dozens of emails or endless Instagram posts. We're trying to limit paralysis by analysis—you know that feeling when you have so many options you end up choosing nothing? We give you a short list of our favorites, so you don't feel overwhelmed.

But the biggest difference is that we're adding original content and behind-the-scenes access. We want people in the community to connect more deeply with businesses, which is why we're introducing weekly business spotlights. You'll get to hear the story behind the shawarma, meet the doctor who started their own practice, and learn why that halal bakery exists.

Think of us as your Muslim concierge service for Dallas. We do the research so you can just enjoy.

You disappeared for a while. What happened, and what made you decide to come back?

Yeah, we owe the community an explanation.

For a year, we published twice a week—every Tuesday and Friday, 104 consecutive issues. We were manually compiling events from mosque websites, Facebook groups, WhatsApp chats. It was exhausting. And somewhere around month 10, we realized we were just listing things. We weren't creating anything unique that you couldn't eventually find elsewhere if you looked hard enough.

So we stopped. Not because we wanted to quit, but because we needed to figure out: What's the point of Hilalz if we're just another event calendar?

We took time to reimagine what we could be. We asked ourselves: What does the Dallas Muslim community actually need? What can we create that doesn't exist anywhere else?

And we came back with a plan.

Walk us through the vision—where is Hilalz Dallas headed in the next year?

We're excited about several new features. First, weekly Muslim business spotlights—in-depth interviews with the entrepreneurs, doctors, artists, and service providers building Dallas's Muslim economy. Every week, you'll meet a different business owner and hear their story.

Second, we're relaunching our halal food coverage with actual reviews—not just mentions. We're visiting restaurants, taking photos, trying the food, and giving you honest recommendations with menu favorites and pricing.

Third, we're building a comprehensive Muslim business directory for DFW. Muslim-owned businesses, searchable and categorized, all in one place.

And fourth, we're launching a proper website with an events hub you can check anytime, plus prayer times, Ramadan calendars, and community resources.

We're committed to serving the DFW Muslim community first. But long-term? We plan to expand to other cities. We want to perfect the model here in Dallas, then help Muslims in other cities get the same kind of resource.

"When we support Muslim businesses, we're supporting Muslim families. It's circular sadaqah."

Why focus on Muslim-owned businesses specifically?

We wanted to contribute to the growth of Muslim businesses in DFW. It's not easy to spread the word about your business, especially when you're competing with established brands that have big marketing budgets.

But here's the thing: when we support Muslim businesses, we're supporting Muslim families. That money goes toward sending their kids to Islamic school, donating to the masjid, and supporting community initiatives. It's circular sadaqah.

What kind of businesses are you hoping to showcase?

Any Muslim-owned business in the DFW area is fair game. Restaurants, retail stores, service companies, real estate agents, caterers, educators, mechanics, car dealerships—everything our community has to offer.

The only requirement? You have to actually be good at what you do. We're not promoting businesses just because they're Muslim-owned. We're promoting them because they provide real value to the community. Quality matters.

How can Dallas Muslims get involved beyond just reading?

We love it when readers reach out! Here's what we need from you:

Nominate businesses. Know a Muslim-owned business we should feature? Let us know.

Share your experiences. Tried the restaurant we recommended? Attended the event we highlighted? Let us know how it went. Those messages mean everything to us.

Spread the word. Know Dallas Muslims who'd benefit from this? Forward the newsletter to them or tell them to subscribe.

Give feedback. What do you love? What's missing? We read every reply.

We've also heard from readers about the impact our spiritual reminder section has had on them. Those messages are heartwarming. We love being connected to our community—this isn't just us broadcasting to you, it's us building something together.

If someone knows a Muslim-owned business that deserves a spotlight, what should they do?

Simple: hit reply to our weekly email or DM us on Instagram [@HilalzDallas]. We read everything.

We're building a list of businesses to feature, and community nominations are how we find the hidden gems.

Final question: What do you want Dallas Muslims to know?

Hilalz Dallas belongs to you as much as it belongs to us.

This isn't the newsletter we send to you—it's OUR newsletter, built together. Your nominations, your feedback, your photos, your stories—that's what makes this valuable. We're just the ones who compile it every week.

So let's build something amazing together. Let's discover the hidden gems in our community. Let's support each other's businesses. Let's connect Dallas Muslims in ways we've never been connected before.
