Happy last Friday of July! Summer is in full swing and the community is showing up strong. This week we're spotlighting Eagle Martial Arts in Murphy, a Muslim-owned martial arts school that has been building confidence, discipline, and community in our area one student at a time and we can personally vouch for them. The weekend lineup is a great one: an ice cream social for college students and young professionals tonight in Sachse, a girls pool party for the little ones, a Qiyam night with Imam Muhammad Abdullah, and a sweet Mama & Me painting afternoon on Sunday. 💭 FAITH REFLECTION — Take care of your Time
There is a surah in the Quran so dense with meaning that Imam Al-Shafi'i once said: "If people were to ponder this surah, it would be sufficient for them." Three verses. One oath. And a complete blueprint for a life well-lived.
"By time. Indeed, mankind is in loss. Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience." (Al-Asr: 1-3)
Allah swears by time itself and when Allah takes an oath, it is to draw our attention to something of immense significance. Time is the one resource that cannot be earned back, saved up, or replaced. Every second that passes is gone permanently. And Allah's verdict on how most people use it? Loss.
Not struggle. Not difficulty, loss, the kind that leaves you with nothing to show for what you spent.
But then comes the exception. Four qualities that transform a life from one of loss into one of profound gain: faith, righteous action, speaking truth, and holding on with patience. Notice that none of these require wealth, status, or special circumstance. They require only intention and effort, two things every single one of us already has access to, right now, today.
The scholars noted that the companions of the Prophet ﷺ would not part ways with one another without first reciting Surah Al-Asr. It was their reminder to each other: don't waste what you've been given. Every farewell was a gentle nudge to go and make your time count.
This week's action: At the start of each day this week, take just two minutes before you pick up your phone or start your morning routine to ask yourself one simple question: "What is the most valuable thing I can do with my time today?" It doesn't have to be something big. It could be a prayer on time, a meaningful conversation, an act of service, or simply being fully present with your family instead of distracted. Then write it down and do it first. Guard your time the way you guard your most precious possessions because on the Day of Judgement, it is the one thing Allah will ask us about most.
❝ The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “There are two blessings which many people lose: (They are) Health and free time for doing good.” (Bukhari)
