🌿Assalamu Alaikum, Dallas!
We're kicking off October with a weekend that has something for literally every member of the family and a faith reflection series that keeps building, week by week, on how to fill our lives with more barakah. Tonight, high schoolers at IAA have a timely conversation about Halloween and how to navigate the season with clarity and confidence, while parents can catch Part 3 of the Tarbiyah in the Modern World series with Dr. Asif Hirani at IANT after Maghrib. Saturday is packed too — sisters can choose between a competitive pickleball tournament at VRIC North or a peaceful candle-making workshop at EPIC, and the whole community is welcome at IACC's community breakfast after Fajr. We also found a brand new halal triple-threat spot right near UTD in Richardson, Chillax Hub. Let's get into it! 🌿
💭 FAITH REFLECTION — The Tie That Carries Barakah
Over the past few weeks we've been talking about barakah; how to invite it, how to grow it, and how to keep it flowing in our lives. Last week we talked about shukr. This week we are highlighting one practice the Prophet ﷺ connected so directly to barakah that it deserves its own spotlight this month:
Silat al-rahm. Maintaining the ties of kinship.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever wishes to have his provision expanded and his lifespan extended, let him maintain his ties of kinship." (Bukhari & Muslim)
Expanded provision. Extended lifespan. Two of the things human beings want most — and Allah placed them directly behind one act: staying connected to your family. Not just the family you see at Eid. Not just the relatives who live nearby. The cousin you haven't called in two years. The aunt whose number you still have but haven't dialed. The uncle who is getting older and won't be here forever.
And the stakes go even higher than barakah. The Prophet ﷺ told us that Allah said: "I am Al-Rahman, and I created the rahm (womb/kinship ties) and derived its name from Mine. Whoever maintains it, I will maintain connection with him, and whoever severs it, I will sever connection with him." (Tirmidhi)
Allah named family ties after one of His own names — Al-Rahman, the Most Merciful. To cut those ties is to risk cutting yourself off from His mercy. To maintain them is to invite His mercy in.
And silat al-rahm doesn't require perfection in the relationship. The Prophet ﷺ was asked: "What if they mistreat me?" He replied: "Even if they mistreat you." (Ahmad) Maintaining the tie is not about whether the other person deserves it. It is about your relationship with Allah.
October is a beautiful month to make this a priority. The summer rush is over, school routines have settled, and there is space to be intentional about the people who matter.
This week's action items:
🌿 Action 1 — Reach out to one relative you haven't spoken to in a long time. Not a text. A phone call. It doesn't have to be long — five minutes to say "I was thinking about you, how are you?" is enough to rekindle a tie that may have quietly frayed. Pick one person this week and make that call. You may never know how much it meant to them.
🌿 Action 2 — Do something intentional for a family member this month. Visit an elderly relative. Send a gift to a cousin going through a hard time. Cook a meal for a family member who is struggling. Write a message to someone in your family telling them what they mean to you. Silat al-rahm is not just about staying in contact — it's about showing up. Choose one family member this October and show up for them in a way you haven't before.
❝ "The one who maintains family ties is not the one who reciprocates — rather, the one who maintains family ties is the one who, when his relatives cut him off, still maintains the tie." (Bukhari) 🤍
