🌿Assalamu Alaikum, Dallas!
We’re back with another packed weekend and Week 2 of our Sunnah Habits series — this week we’re diving into the Prophetic bedtime routine, and we promise it’s going to make you rethink your relationship with your phone after 9 PM. Tonight the community has some beautiful options: high school sisters can head to IAA Allen for an evening of faith, friendship bracelets, and good company, sisters of all ages are welcome at IANT’s cozy Sips n’ Sisterhood gathering, and high schools can join MAS Dallas for Part 2 of the State of the Ummah series tackling the loneliness epidemic. Saturday brings a Kids’ Qiyam Night at IANT, a College Prep Workshop for 8th–12th graders, and a fun fall evening for teen sisters at ICF. And for the halal find this week — Mochinut in Murphy just leveled up their menu in a big way and the reel will have you making plans. Let’s get into it! 🌿
💭 FAITH REFLECTION — Sunnah Habits That Change Your Life (Week 2): The Prophetic Bedtime Routine
Last week we talked about how the Prophet ﷺ taught us to begin our mornings — with a waking du’a and the morning adhkar that wrap the entire day in remembrance and protection. This week we’re going to the other end of the day: bedtime.
We live in a culture that has completely lost its relationship with sleep. We scroll until our eyes give out. We fall asleep with the TV on. We stay up doing things that could wait and then drag ourselves through the next day running on caffeine and willpower. All this despite the fact that we have a very clear guidance from the Prophet Muhammed ﷺ on how to wind down our day. He gave us a complete bedtime routine, a set of actions and words that prepare the heart, the body, and the soul for rest the way it was always meant to be done.
1. Make wudu before you sleep.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “When you go to your bed, perform wudu as you do for prayer.” (Bukhari & Muslim) There is something profound about entering sleep in a state of purity, it is an act of readiness, as if to say: if I do not wake up, I want to meet Allah clean.
2. Sleep on your right side.
The Prophet ﷺ consistently slept on his right side and placed his right cheek on his right hand and taught us to do the same.
3. Say the bedtime du’a.
“Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya.” — In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live. (Bukhari) This du’a reframes sleep entirely. It is not just rest, it is a minor death, a return to Allah, and a trust that He will give you back your soul in the morning if He wills. Every night becomes an act of tawakul.
4. Read Ayatul Kursi, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas.
The Prophet ﷺ told us that whoever reads Ayatul Kursi before sleeping, Allah will appoint a guardian over them and Shaytan will not come near them until morning. (Bukhari) And blowing the last three surahs over yourself three times before sleep was a habit the Prophet ﷺ never abandoned even when he was ill.
These are just a few of the habits that The Prophet ﷺ used to perform before bed. He also used to recite Surat al Mulk, dust his bed out before going in and saying longer duaa’s that are mentioned in other Hadith. It would be amazing if we could do everything described in the Sunnah, but if we are able to adopt a few of the habits into our daily night-time then we are still walking in the footsteps of our beloved Rasul ﷺ.
Notice what is completely absent from this routine: screens. Notifications. The news. The group chat. Not because these things are haram, but because the Prophet ﷺ knew that what you fill your heart and mind with right before sleep is what settles into your subconscious overnight. End the day with Allah’s words and His remembrance, and that is what your soul rests in.
This week’s action items:
🌿 Action 1 — Put your phone on the other side of the room tonight. Charge it away from your bed. This single change removes the biggest barrier to a Sunnah bedtime and forces you to reach for something better; your adhkar, your du’a, your right side. Try it for seven nights and notice how differently you fall asleep.
🌿 Action 2 — Read Ayatul Kursi before you close your eyes tonight. One ayah, every night, before sleep. That is the protection the Prophet ﷺ described. It costs you thirty seconds and it is priceless.
Next week we’ll continue the series with the Sunnah of eating and drinking, the Prophetic habits around food that transform your relationship with gratitude, health, and barakah at the table.
❝ “When any one of you goes to bed, let him dust off his bed with the inside of his lower garment, for he does not know what came onto it after he left it. Then let him say: Bismika Rabbi wada’tu janbi wa bika arfa’uhu.” (Bukhari & Muslim) 🌿
